About Our Founder

Inspired by her dedication to preserving the tradition of family mealtimes and driven by the spirit of entrepreneurism, Doris Christopher founded The Pampered Chef® from the basement of her suburban Chicago home in 1980.

Her experience as a home economics teacher and at-home mother enabled her to recognize the need for time-saving kitchen tools and techniques designed to make cooking quick and easy. She came up with a simple plan: offer professional-quality kitchen equipment directly to the consumers through in-home cooking demonstrations performed by a sales force of “Pampered Chef Consultants.” Let customers see how the products work, try them out and even taste the results.

With the support of her husband, Jay, and two young daughters, Julie and Kelley, Christopher put her plan into action. Twenty years later, her business has moved to a succession of progressively larger facilities and blossomed into a $700 million enterprise.

The Pampered Chef became a member of the Direct Selling Association (DSA) of the United States in 1986. Christopher was named to the Board of Directors in 1992, and then served as Chairperson. She is currently the Immediate Past Chairperson of the DSA and Chairperson of the Direct Selling Education Foundation (DSEF), a branch organization of the DSA.

The Pampered Chef - Canada is also a member of the Direct Sellers Association of Canada. In 1994, Ernst & Young, Inc. magazine and Merrill Lynch selected Christopher as the regional winner of the National Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Masters category. Also in 1994, The Pampered Chef was among Inc. magazine’s 500 fastest-growing privately held companies in America. In fact, projected sales figures show the numbers growing at an average of almost $100 million each year for the next five years.

Christopher has repeatedly been included in Working Woman magazine’s listing of the nation’s top women business owners, and she has appeared on regional and national television as an expert on family mealtimes, direct selling and entrepreneurship.

In March of 1996, The Pampered Chef launched its business in Canada, extending Doris’ mission of preserving the family mealtime. There are now more than 3,500 Consultants in Canada, with new Consultants starting their own businesses every day.

Doris’ unfailing commitment to fostering entrepreneurship in women is woven into the very fabric of The Pampered Chef. Many Pampered Chef Consultants are mothers who have been empowered to develop lucrative businesses while staying home to raise their children and manage their households.

In 1991, Christopher expanded the company’s mission to combat hunger in the U.S. with the creation of the Round-Up from the Heart® campaign, and the same program was adapted in Canada in 1999. This collective effort between the Pampered Chef’s Consultants, customers and corporate employees helps the Canadian Association of Food Banks feed approximately three million hungry Canadians every year, 40 percent of whom are under the age of 18. CAFB members expect to distribute more than one hundred million pounds of food in 2001.

The Pampered Chef has been honoured with the U.S. DSA’s Vision for Tomorrow Award for its efforts to help feed the nation’s hungry. It has also received two U.S. DSA Industry Innovation Awards — the first for its support of entrepreneurial women, and the second for excellence in Web technology for the Come to the Table Web site. Canada received an honourable mention from the Canadian DSA.

Christopher is certified in Family and Consumer Services and is an active member of the business section of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She is also a member of the international organization, The Committee of 200.

One factory, in particular - is responsible for producing over 30% of this total amount. This one factory manufactures “Panasonic” microwave ovens, “Sharp” microwave ovens, and “LG” microwave ovens. All three “national brands” are produced at the same factory, by the same machinery and the same human intervention. All three brands have virtually the same parts - and use the same technologies, to deliver essentially the same final product. Yet … despite their similarities, all three national brand microwave ovens vary as much as 60% in their Suggested Retail Price - due in large part to what the company believes is the “perceived value” of their product! They’re really not any better - but, they have found a way to convince the consumer that they are worth the extra cost. This sort of marketing strategy is very common with “national brand” products - and is only possible by developing a strong identity and “perceived value” for the goods.

I was introduced to the amazing world of network marketing in 1988 by my friend, Charlie Umphred. We have been partners and full-time network marketing professionals from 1989 until we opened the doors to Scent-Sations in the Fall of 2002.

I really love the fact that in network marketing you get to “wake up when your eyes open…not when some silly alarm clock tells you to” . . . PLUS you get to work with motivated people from all over the U.S.A. (and in some cases, around the world!) . . . BUT I was never able to reconcile the fact that, although most good network marketing programs have excellent products, their wholesale pricing never really allowed distributors to make enough money by simply selling products to customers!

In other words, if the distributors in my organization were not sponsoring other distributors into their respective program, they were unable to put badly needed money in their pockets daily.

I told Charlie that someday we would find a company with integrity that had a good product(s) that people could retail for daily money and also develop a downline organization for residual income.

Then one day it happened…but not the way we ever expected it to happen! Instead of finding a company we BECAME a company!

I was doing a fundraiser for my son’s basketball team selling paraffin scented candles manufactured by a local candle-maker. The kids sold about 1,400 candles, they smelled incredible, and everyone was commenting on how great they were.

When the candles were delivered the “candle-makers” Lynn and Carmen Milazzo asked me if I was still involved in marketing. When I answered “yes” Carmen told me that they had developed a new candle made of alternative ingredients and he was looking for some advice on the best way to market the product.

I asked Carmen what was so special about his new “alternative” candle and he started telling me about his desire to make a candle that had all of the positive benefits of scented candles and none of the negatives of scented candles. His main focus was to create a candle using materials that addressed soot damage in homes. He told me about a candle made from soy that was practically soot free, burned longer than most paraffin candles and could be cleaned up with hot soapy water. .

The “Entrepreneur” in me got extremely excited and I called my partner, Charlie and told him that we were going into the “candle business!” You see, I have a good friend who has made a fortune in business and he once told me that, in his opinion, the best way to succeed was to find an existing business and improve upon it. When I did my research and saw how huge the scented candle business was and realized this kind of candle represented new and “better” technology, well, the hair literally stood up on the back of my neck!

Today, Carmen, Lynn, Charlie and myself are partners and the future never looked brighter! We manufacture what many people are now calling the finest scented candle ever made and our distributor force grows monthly!

Our Goal at Scent-Sations, Inc. is to empower anyone to work part time from his or her home to build a local, regional, national and eventually an international business by showing our products and our business plan.

AND . . . if he or she was never able to recruit a person he or she can always earn money by retailing our products!

Every woman has a story to tell and we feel very fortunate to have this opportunity to share our personal story with so many others. Our start came from just being friends, a couple of moms, who both happen to really love jewelry – especially fine Sterling Silver Jewelry.

We first met when the oldest of each of our three children started first grade. Fatefully, we had both signed up to be room mothers and immediately became the best of friends. After chatting about how we could earn a little extra cash, we tried a few new business ideas. We had a lot of fun, but it wasn’t until we each took $25 from our grocery fund and pursued our passion for Sterling Silver Jewelry that we really began to love our “jobs.” We started designing our own jewelry creations and hosting what we called “A Fun Ladies’ Night out Playing Dress-up with Jewelry!”™ Quickly, one party led to another, and, it wasn’t long before Hostesses and Customers began telling us, “You look like you are having so much fun. We wish we could have your jobs!”

So in 1997, after hundreds of successful parties, we began our journey and Silpada Designs was born. We created an exclusive line of Silpada Designs Sterling Silver Jewelry and our very first Silpada Designs Catalog. Friends and Customers became independent Silpada Designs Representatives.

Companies list, based on how many people around the world searched Google for information about the company.

I got the idea for this ranking method after Kim Klaver recently published of the most popular MLM companies based on Alexa rankings. Ms. Klaver, one of my favorite trainers and leaders in the network marketing industry, openly acknowledges that her “Top 50 Network Marketing Companies” list is not the last word on which companies are the best. Rather, she notes that her list is simply one source of information one can use to gauge the popularity of various MLM companies.

Alexa ratings are based on the number of times Alexa toolbar users visit a web site. There are of course some limitations to the statistics compiled by Alexa, as described on the Alexa web site. One of those limitations is the fact that Alexa Toolbar users constitute a small percentage of the population and they might not accurately represent the individuals surfing the web for information about mlm companies. (See Note 1 for more details on this point.)

As I thought about the fact that Alexa Toolbar users might not constitute a representative sample of Internet users, I wondered if their was another way to measure interest in a company. There is: Google Trends. This service from Google Labs, allows you to compare the number of searches for various keywords across time and against each other. Although the service does not reveal the raw number of searches, that information is less important if your goal is to determine the relative number of searches for various MLM companies.

There are, of course, limitations to Google Trends as well, most notably the fact that it is a “beta” version tool, meaning it is still in the testing stage of development. Google includes the following statement at the bottom of any Google Trends results page:

Google Trends aims to provide insights into broad search patterns. As a Google Labs product, it is still in the early stages of development. Also, it is based upon just a portion of our searches, and several approximations are used when computing your results. Please keep this in mind when using it.

With those caveats in mind, below are graphs showing the relative popularity of the top 25 network marketing companies, based on Google searches world-wide. They are divided into groups of five because Google Trends allows you to compare up to five search terms at one time. A list of the top 25 companies follows the charts.
